Death of Gesualdo

Death of Gesualdo sees The Gesualdo Six collaborate once more with Bill Barclay’s Concert Theatre Works following the hugely successful Secret Byrd, joined this time by six actors who enact tableaux vivant and superimpose Gesualdo’s macabre psyche onto his most powerful music. With choreography from Will Tuckett, the programme features Gesualdo’s Tenebrae, with a selection from Madrigal books 1-6, cut and edited by Bill Barclay. Commissioned by The Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, The National Centre for Early Music in York, and Music Before 1800 in NYC, it received the highest acclaim for a run of sold out premiere outings at the commissioning venues and heads to the Edinburgh International and Kilkenny Arts Festivals this summer.

It’s a cut above anything that’s gone before. The subject matter may be gruesome but the staging, singing and acting are sublime.” The Times (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

“Singing with precision, pure tone and nuanced expression, their eyes blackened as if gouged out, the Gesualdo Six are outstanding…This show is a creepy juxtaposition of beauty and horror, like the music of Gesualdo itself.”
The Guardian (⭐⭐⭐⭐)
